Diet of Oily Fish and Moderate Wine Consumption Reduce Skin Cancers

February 15, 2010 12:39 pm

Monthly, I eagerly await the arrival of my Women’s Health Magazine to scour it for the latest in wellness.  In the new March issue, I was thrilled to read about the benefits of consuming oily fish and moderate wine related to skin cancer.  Over the past year, I have shifted my diet to mostly fish, vegetables, nuts, and an Omega-3 supplement.  The benefits, on all levels, have been very apparent.  I spend a lot of time outdoors, so the added benefit of fighting skin cancer I found fascinating.

According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, order some wine with your salmon to shore up that SPF.

Researchers evaluated the diets of more than 1000 people and found that those who ate a weekly serving of oily fish (such as salmon), developed 28 percent fewer potentially cancerous skin lesions and those who drank a half glass of wine everyday has 27 percent fewer.

Oily fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which may enhance skin resistance to ultraviolet radiation, while polyphenols in wine counteract sun damage.

Red Wine and Dark Chocolate, Potent Cancer Killers

February 11, 2010 11:39 am

Red wine and dark chocolate are potent medicine for killing cancer, according to a recent study by the Angiogenesis Foundation.  Red grapes and dark chocolate join blueberries, garlic, soy and teas as ingredients that starve cancer while feeding our bodies.

The Massachusetts-based foundation is identifying foods containing chemicals that evidently choke-off blood supplies to tumors, starving them to death.   The foundation also discovered that anti-angiogenesis properties of certain foods melt away fat, which relies heavily on blood flow to sustain itself.

Exercise 3O Minutes a Day – Reduce Cancer Risk

February 10, 2010 9:22 am

Get moving!  According to a recent study released by fitness experts at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, being active for at least 30 minutes a day reduces your risk of developing certain types of cancers.  The Center has designed an exclusive exercise plan based on this evidence that will fit into any lifestyle.

Being active for at least 30 minutes a day lowers your risk of breast, endometrial and colon cancers, 60 minutes is even better.  Physical activity may protect against cancer because it lowers body fat, hormone levels, and keeps your digestive system working well.
