Marc and Janice Mondavi, co-proprietors of Napa Valley’s oldest winery Charles Krug, have been selected to serve as the 2012 Vintner Chairs for the Kentucky Bluegrass Wine Auction & Derby Gala presented by the Lexington Cancer Foundation, Inc.

The wine-making couple has supported and participated in LCF’s annual charity wine event for the past three years. This spring the couple is taking on a different role as vintner chairs. The Mondavi’s are working closely with the LCF board to plan the eighth annual event, set to begin Wednesday, May 2 and end Saturday, May 5.

Marc and Janice are part of the well respected Mondavi family of Napa Valley. Wine making has been the family business since 1943 when Cesare Mondavi, Marc’s grandfather, purchased the Charles Krug property for $75,000. Today, Marc shares management responsibilities and ownership of Charles Krug with his 97-year-old father Peter, Sr. and brother, Peter, Jr.

In 2011, Charles Krug celebrated its 150th anniversary as a winery, nearly 70 of those years have been in the hands of the Mondavi family. Marc joined his father and brother in creating Bordeaux style wines at Charles Krug in the early 1980s. He oversees 11 vineyards located on 850 acres of Napa Valley land. Also, the winery wrapped up a $44.5 million project that involved upgrading  the vineyards and facilities in 2011.

The winery currently produces the premium estate-driven Charles Krug wines, including cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, zinfandel, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. These wines are priced from $18 to $70 and available across the nation.

Charles Krug wines have received high remarks at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition and are regularly rated in wine publications, such as Wine & Spirits Magazine.

Marc and Janice are not the only Mondavi’s to participate in this year’s event. Chiara Mondavi, an artist and niece of Marc and Janice, was selected as the artist of the 2012 featured artwork. Each year, LCF features an original piece of artwork to represent the Kentucky Bluegrass Wine Auction & Derby Gala. The 2012 piece is an acrylic on canvas, titles “Mustard” by Chiara. Her works are represented by Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley.

LCF is thrilled to have the Mondavi’s as vintner chairs and thanks them for their kindness and generosity.
